Iron Deficiency Anemia – Are You At Risk?

One of the most common types of anemia is iron deficiency anemia, which happens when there is a deficiency of iron in the body. Above all, iron which is required to form hemoglobin for carrying oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the body is the major part of red blood cells. Even though, the dietary deficiency of iron is common in most of the developing countries, in developed countries the major reason behind it is the blood reduction in the genitourinary tracts.

However, regarding, who is most prone to this deficiency – premenopausal women and pregnant women represent the population with maximum cases across the globe.

Major causes that lead to Iron Deficiency Anemia

  1. Diets low in iron.
  2. Body changes – Body needs more iron and increased production of red blood cells during – pregnancy, lactation, growth spurts in children and teenagers.
  3. Gastrointestinal tract abnormalities.
  4. Loss of blood due to injury, GI bleeding or menstrual bleeding.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia

  1. Abnormal paleness of the skin
  2. Lack of energy, fatigue
  3. Irritability
  4. Increased heart rate
  5. Enlarged spleen
  6. Sore or swollen tongue.
  7. A person may express a desire to eat substances like – ice, dirt, etc.

However, these symptoms may resemble other blood conditions. Hence, it is recommended to consult a certified doctor for proper diagnosis.
